TL;DR
- A ChatGPT workspace is a company-owned ChatGPT account with admin controls, shared projects and one bill. OpenAI sells two: ChatGPT Business and ChatGPT Enterprise.
- ChatGPT Business is self-serve for teams of 2 to 200. A Standard seat costs $20 per user per month on annual billing or $25 monthly. A Premium seat costs $100 annual or $125 monthly and gives five times the usage.
- ChatGPT Enterprise is sold through OpenAI sales at custom pricing. It adds SCIM, role-based access controls, Enterprise Key Management, custom data retention policies, data residency in ten regions for eligible customers and 24/7 support with SLAs.
- OpenAI says it does not train its models on Business or Enterprise data by default. Personal Plus accounts can be used for training unless the user opts out.
- Neither plan makes you compliant on its own. Business has no BAA for health data. A BAA needs a product on the OpenAI HIPAA-eligible list, such as ChatGPT for Enterprise with a Regulated Workspace.
What is a ChatGPT workspace?
A ChatGPT workspace is a ChatGPT environment your company owns, with its own members, settings and content. Everyone works in one place with central billing, admin controls and shared projects, instead of each person paying for a personal account.
OpenAI offers two workspace plans for companies:
- ChatGPT Business, a self-serve plan for teams of 2 to 200. You sign up and pay by card.
- ChatGPT Enterprise, a sales-led plan for larger organizations and teams that need stronger security, compliance and data controls.
Both include ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex. OpenAI renamed ChatGPT Team to ChatGPT Business on August 29, 2025. The rename did not change the plan. Prices and seat options have changed since, so check the date on older articles about ChatGPT Team.

What a team pays for Standard seats on annual billing: 2 seats cost $40 a month ($480 billed once a year), 5 cost $100 a month, 10 cost $200 and 20 cost $400.
The rules that affect your bill:
- Minimum and maximum. A workspace needs at least 2 paid seats, in any mix of Standard and Premium. Since August 24, 2026, one subscription can hold up to 200 paid seats. Workspaces created before then keep their old limit. OpenAI points larger teams to ChatGPT Enterprise.
- Adding and removing seats. New seats are charged right away, prorated for the rest of the billing cycle. Reductions take effect at the start of the next cycle. Unused seats are generally not refunded.
- Credits. When someone hits their seat limit on advanced features, the workspace can keep going by buying credits. Credits are optional, pooled across the workspace, valid for 12 months and generally not refundable. You can set usage alerts on them.
- API usage is separate. A workspace subscription does not include the OpenAI API. Developers pay for that on its own account.
- Nonprofits. OpenAI offers eligible nonprofits up to 75% off Business or Enterprise through OpenAI for Nonprofits.
How is ChatGPT Enterprise priced?
OpenAI does not publish Enterprise prices. You talk to its sales team and sign an agreement.
- OpenAI offers credit-based and token-based pricing for Enterprise.
- On credit-based agreements, the workspace buys a shared credit pool at the contract level. There are no per-seat usage caps by default, and admins can set spend limits by group.
- Enterprise supports invoicing and volume discounts. Business is paid by card.
What about ChatGPT Plus?
Plus is a personal plan at $20 a month for one person. It is not a workspace. There is no admin console, no single sign-on and no company bill, and its content can be used for training unless the user opts out. Even after opting out, thumbs up or down feedback can still be used. Plus is fine for one person working on non-sensitive tasks. A team that shares work or handles client data needs a workspace.
Is a ChatGPT workspace safe for company data?
What OpenAI says about both workspace plans:
- It does not use Business or Enterprise inputs or outputs to train its models by default. Thumbs up or down feedback in a workspace does not change that.
- Data is encrypted at rest (AES-256) and in transit (TLS 1.2 or higher). OpenAI says the same for its personal plans.
- Both list SOC 2 Type 2. The ISO 27001 family of certifications is listed for Enterprise, not Business.
- OpenAI says it can sign a Data Processing Addendum (DPA) for both Business and Enterprise.
- OpenAI is starting to offer data residency on Business. You choose the storage region at checkout, it is not yet available to all customers, and outside the US a copy of prompts and responses is still kept in the US for abuse monitoring.
What only Enterprise adds:
- Your own keys and your own rules. Enterprise Key Management, custom data retention policies, data residency in ten regions for eligible customers, IP allowlisting and the Compliance API for logs.
- Health data. ChatGPT Business is not on the OpenAI list of HIPAA-eligible products. ChatGPT for Enterprise with a Regulated Workspace is, with a signed BAA. OpenAI says BAAs and Zero Data Retention need a contracted offering.
If your business works with regulated data, the plan is only one part of the answer. Professional rules still decide what can go into any AI tool. See our guides for lawyers and accountants.
What can a ChatGPT workspace connect to?
Both plans support plugins, which connect ChatGPT to the tools a team already uses. The OpenAI plugin directory includes Gmail, Google Drive, Google Calendar, Outlook email and calendar, SharePoint, Teams, Slack, GitHub, Salesforce, HubSpot, Box, Dropbox, Stripe and QuickBooks. Both also include add-ins for Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Google Sheets.
- Availability depends on the plugin, the plan and the workspace settings.
- Admins decide which plugins are allowed. Where supported, they can limit a plugin to read-only or require approval before ChatGPT makes changes. Enterprise also offers role-based access controls to limit who can use each app.
- OpenAI says data from connected apps is not used for training by default on Business and Enterprise. When a plugin needs information, that information is shared with the plugin provider under its own privacy terms.
What does an admin have to set up?
This is where most self-serve setups stall. The plan works on day one, but a workspace nobody configured is just shared personal accounts with one bill.
On ChatGPT Business:
- Roles. Business has four roles: Owner (billing, identity, all settings), Admin (members and routine settings), Analytics Viewer and Member. Only owners can buy seats, change seat types and change roles.
- Invites and seats. Invite people one by one or by CSV, and assign Standard or Premium seats. An invite does not reserve a seat.
- Sign-in. Turn on single sign-on (SAML or OIDC) and verify your company domain so people sign in with work accounts.
- Plugins. Decide which plugins the team can use and whether they can write or only read.
- Spend controls. Set spend controls and credit usage alerts so extra usage does not surprise you on the bill.
- Who can join. Members can invite other people, and that cannot be turned off. Workspace discovery is on by default, so review it in the identity and access settings.
- Personal workspaces. When people join, they can merge their personal ChatGPT history into the workspace. That merge cannot be undone, and it cancels a personal Plus subscription bought on the web. If they later leave the company, they can lose access to what they merged. Tell the team before they accept.
- A usage policy. Write down what may and may not go into ChatGPT, who checks the output and which plugins are approved.
On ChatGPT Enterprise, add:
- User provisioning. Connect SCIM to your identity provider so people are added and removed automatically.
- Groups and permissions. Set role-based access controls by group, including who can use which apps and how much each group can spend.
- Data settings. Agree data residency with OpenAI before the workspace is provisioned, because it cannot be changed later in settings. Set retention policies, and decide with your OpenAI account team whether to use Enterprise Key Management.
- Personal workspaces. On Enterprise workspaces with a verified company domain, OpenAI may require people to merge or export and close their personal workspace within 7 days. Admins cannot turn this off, so tell the team before rollout.
- Compliance logging. Connect the Compliance API if your security or legal team needs an audit trail.
Which one fits your team?
- Choose Business if you have 2 to 200 people, want to start this week and can work within the standard data controls.
- Choose Enterprise if you need more than 200 seats, SCIM provisioning, your own encryption keys, custom retention, wider data residency options, a BAA or invoice billing.
- Stay on Plus only for one person doing work with no company or client data.
Do you need someone to set it up?
Not always. A team of 2 to 5 people with simple needs can sign up for Business, invite each other and start working in an afternoon.
It is worth getting help when you want more than chat. That means workflows built around your processes and a company knowledge base the team can use in ChatGPT. It also means training so people actually use it, and someone managing the workspace as the team grows. On Enterprise, it also means planning identity, data and compliance settings before rollout.
Governance
Governance is the set of rules for how your team uses ChatGPT, plus the workspace settings that enforce them. Without it, a workspace drifts back into personal accounts with one bill.
- What data can go in. Sort your data into what is fine, what needs approval and what never goes in, such as client records or regulated data.
- Who can do what. Match roles and permissions to jobs, and review them when people join, change roles or leave.
- Which plugins are allowed. Approve each connected app, choose read-only or write access, and remove what nobody uses.
- Human review. Decide which outputs a person must check before they go to a client, into a filing or into a decision.
- Usage and spend. Review usage analytics and credit spend every month.
- Offboarding. Remove people the day they leave. On Enterprise, SCIM can do this automatically from your identity provider.
- Regular review. Revisit the policy at least every quarter, because OpenAI changes features and terms often.
We write the policy with you, set the matching controls in the workspace and train your team on it.
360 Automation AI is an OpenAI Select Partner, and we set up both kinds of workspace:
- ChatGPT Business is the workspace our Team plan runs on. We do not resell it. You buy the seats directly from OpenAI, and we reimburse the Standard seat cost for up to 20 employees. We set up and manage the workspace, maintain your company brain and automate up to two business processes a month. The Team plan is $2,899 per month (promotional price) plus a $4,997 onboarding fee. See the plans page.
- ChatGPT Enterprise: we do not resell it either. You buy it from OpenAI, and we help you plan it, set it up and roll it out, from single sign-on and SCIM to data settings, plugins, policy and training.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between ChatGPT Business and Enterprise?
Business is a self-serve workspace for teams of 2 to 200, paid by card, from $20 per user per month on annual billing. Enterprise is sold through OpenAI sales at custom pricing. It adds SCIM, role-based access controls, your own encryption keys, custom retention, wider data residency options, ISO certifications and priority support.
What is the minimum number of seats for ChatGPT Business?
Two. A workspace needs at least 2 paid seats, in any mix of Standard and Premium. One subscription can hold up to 200.
What is the difference between ChatGPT Business and Plus?
Plus is a personal plan for one person at $20 a month. Business is a team workspace at $20 per user per month on annual billing or $25 monthly. It adds admin controls, single sign-on, workspace sharing and one company bill. OpenAI says it does not train on Business data by default. Plus data can be used for training unless the user opts out.
Does a ChatGPT workspace train on my data?
OpenAI says it does not use Business or Enterprise inputs or outputs to train its models by default. Check the current OpenAI terms before relying on this for sensitive work.
Is ChatGPT Business HIPAA compliant?
No. ChatGPT Business is not a HIPAA-eligible product and does not come with a BAA. OpenAI signs BAAs only for products on its HIPAA-eligible list, such as ChatGPT for Healthcare and ChatGPT for Enterprise with a Regulated Workspace. A BAA does not make a business compliant on its own.
Can I switch from ChatGPT Plus to a workspace?
Yes. Create a Business workspace from your ChatGPT account and invite your team, or talk to OpenAI sales about Enterprise. When you join a workspace, you can keep your personal workspace separate or merge it in. A merge cannot be undone and cancels a Plus subscription bought on the web. If you keep them separate, Plus keeps billing until you cancel it. On Enterprise workspaces with a verified company domain, OpenAI may require you to merge or export and close your personal workspace within 7 days.
